The Central Organisation for Radioactive Waste (COVRA) measures how much radioactivity is discharged into waste water and ventilation air. RIVM checks these measurements eight times a year. These 'counterchecks' are carried out to ensure that the analyses carried out by COVRA itself are reliable. COVRA takes the samples to be analysed at intervals throughout the year. Just as in previous years, generally speaking, the gamma analyses carried out on the waste water in the counterchecks in 2018 agreed with COVRA's results. The gamma spectrometry results and the results of the total alpha determination, tritium determination and the 14C determination in waste water in the analyses carried out by RIVM and COVRA corresponded well. Although RIVM and COVRA use different measuring principles, RIVM's total beta measurements for 2018 agreed fairly well with COVRA's residual beta measurements. RIVM and COVRA's results for the ventilation air samples from the Waste Treatment Building (AVG) and the High-Level Radioactive Waste Treatment and Storage Building (HABOG) also corresponded well. The Authority for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection (ANVS) commissions RIVM to carry out these counterchecks every year.
