Counterchecks on measurements of radioactivity in waste water and ventilation air at the nuclear power station in Borssele : Period 2018Publiekssamenvatting
The nuclear power station in Borssele (KCB) measures how much radioactivity the station discharges via the nuclear waste water system and the nuclear ventilation system. RIVM checks these measurements eight times a year. Via these counterchecks, RIVM determines whether the analyses carried out by the nuclear power station itself are reliable. KCB takes the samples to be analysed at intervals throughout the year. As was the case in previous years, the gamma analyses of waste water from the counterchecks in 2018 generally agree with the results of the nuclear power station. The agreement with regard to the 3H data in waste water was reasonable but there is still room for improvement. Neither the nuclear power station nor RIVM found any strontium isotopes or alpha activity in the waste water. In the ventilation air samples from periods 2, 3, and 7, RIVM found a slight quantity of 131I. KCB did not find any gamma activity. The results of the measurements of 3H and 14C in ventilation air, sampled with a zeolite cartridge, agree reasonably well. The Authority for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection (ANVS) commissions RIVM to carry out these counterchecks every year.
