Mistakes are part of life. However, mistakes can lead to unsafe situations, for example if people momentarily lose their focus. Such situations can be caused by people becoming distracted. That is often the case, for example, in occupational accidents due to collisions between vehicles and persons. These can occur if the injured pedestrian or the driver of the vehicle are distracted. Distractions are of course unavoidable, as people cannot be 100% alert throughout the day. RIVM therefore recommends looking critically at the work processes in order to prevent hazardous situations. For example, make sure that pedestrians do not come near vehicles in places where the driver as well as pedestrian have to focus on the task at hand. This is clear from an analysis by RIVM of fifty serious work accidents over the 2012-2018 period. People can, for example, become distracted at the workplace if they see litter lying about or an obstacle in their way or if they are focused on their task. As a result, they will not notice changes in their surroundings such as a pedestrian passing by or an oncoming vehicle.. People do not seem to voluntarily seek such distraction at the workplace, as sometimes happens with drivers of cars on the road using their smart phones. For its analysis, RIVM made use of information from the Storybuilder database, in which serious occupational accidents in the Netherlands are registered. In addition, information was also used from data sources from the Dutch Inspectorate of Social Affairs and Employment.
