Periode 2019
    Translated Title
Counterchecks on measurements of radioactivity in waste water and ventilation air at Urenco Nederland B.V. Period 2019
    Publiekssamenvatting
The factory of Urenco Nederland, which focuses on uranium enrichment, measures the quantity of radioactivity it discharges to the environment via its own waste water and ventilation air. RIVM checks these measurements eight times a year. Via these counterchecks, RIVM determines whether the analyses performed by Urenco itself are reliable. Urenco takes the samples to be analysed at intervals throughout the year. In 2019, the gross alpha results and the gamma analyses of wastewater in the counterchecks are in good agreement with the results found by Urenco itself. The agreement with regard to the gross beta results is slightly improved after correction for ingrowth or decay of 234Th. The measurements show that the activity concentrations in waste water in the eight samples are low: 0.1 – 5.5 kBq∙m-3 for gross alpha and 0.3 – 9.7 kBq∙m-3 for gross beta. The radioactivity in ventilation air is very close to the level of radon naturally present in outdoor air. The results of the values measured by Urenco in ventilation air agree moderately to reasonably well with the RIVM analyses. The gross alpha and beta activity found naturally in outdoor air is caused by radon daughters, as is the ratio between the gross alpha and gross beta activity. This ratio would be completely different if uranium were to be released. It is therefore reasonable to assume that no uranium was released into ventilation air in 2019. The Authority for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection (ANVS) commissions RIVM to carry out these counterchecks every year.
