Various medical implants made out of metal, such as hip and knee implants, contain chromium. RIVM has investigated whether people who have these types of implants are exposed to chromium-6 and whether this causes adverse health effects. The current scientific literature does not provide evidence for severe adverse health effects in the body caused by chromium-6 from medical implants. This is the conclusion of research performed by RIVM and commissioned by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. Chromium can be released as chromium-6, which is a harmful form of this metal, and can diffuse from implants when it comes into contact with bodily fluids surrounding the implant. The majority of chromium-6 is rapidly transformed into chromium-3, which is less harmful. However, a small part of chromium-6 can reach the blood and spread throughout the body. With the current level of scientific knowledge, it is not possible to determine the exact exposure level, but it is possible to conclude that it does not cause severe health effects. There is a small number of studies that show an increased chance of metal allergy in people who have an implant that contains chromium. This is, however, rarely observed and does not cause severe health effects. Metal allergy can also be caused by other metals that are present in implants. The implant itself can cause local effects, such as irritation or inflammation. These adverse health effects are not related to chromium-6. This research has been conducted because previous research has shown that exposure to chromium-6 in the workplace is potentially harmful to human health. This depends on various factors, including whether people have been exposed to large amounts of chromium-6, how often this happened, and in what way they have been exposed (such as through inhalation or ingestion).
