Recreational fishermen can catch fish and shrimps, collect oysters and clams, and cut sea vegetables in the Western Scheldt (Dutch: Westerschelde), an estuary in the south-west of the Netherlands. Water in this estuary contains high concentrations of perfluoralkyl and polyfluoralkyl chemicals (PFAS) due to discharge via the waste water of companies. Because of this, products obtained from the Western Scheldt contain PFAS. PFAS are a group of chemicals that may be harmful to health at already low levels of exposure. RIVM calculated how often adults can consume a portion of fish (whiting, flounder, smelt and sea bass), shrimps, oysters, clams or sea lavender (as a sea vegetable) from the Western Scheldt. For this, RIVM calculated the amount of these products adults can consume without exceeding the health-based guidance value for PFAS. Below this guidance value no harmful effects on health are expected. If the long-term exposure to PFAS exceeds this guidance value harmful effects may occur. The calculations show that people can consume sea lavender without restrictions, because it contains a very low concentration of PFAS. A portion of self-caught flounder from the Western Scheldt can be consumed twice per year. Sea bass can be consumed one to five times and smelt two to 7 times. A portion of whiting can be consumed four to 18 times per year and a portion shrimps five to six times. Both oysters and clams from the Western Scheldt can be consumed 14 times per year to twice per week. The range in the number of times that a product can be consumed is due to uncertainties about low concentrations of PFAS in the products. The calculations were performed separately for each product. If people combine these products, they can consume less of each. In its calculations, RIVM only included the intake of PFAS via the consumption of products from the Western Scheldt. However, people are also exposed to PFAS via other food products and drinking water, which already results in an exposure that exceeds the health-based guidance value. It is therefore important to reduce the consumption of products that contain high concentrations of PFAS, such as fish, shellfish and crustaceans from the Western Scheldt. The calculations were based on products that were collected in November 2021. For oysters and clams, the PFAS concentrations depended on the location where they were collected. Lower concentrations were analysed in the western part of the Western Scheldt than in the eastern part.
