Onderzoek Beleving Woonomgeving (OBW). Hinder en slaapverstoring, de 2021-cijfers
    Translated Title
Study of Perception of the Home Environment (OBW). Annoyance and sleep disturbance – 2021 figures
    Publiekssamenvatting
The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management (I&W) wants to know how residents experience their home environment. It has carried out investigations in this area since 1977. Since 2003, these have been carried out by RIVM. Among other things, the study maps out how residents experience noise, vibrations, odours and safety in the home environment. In 2021, annoyance and sleep disturbance levels appeared to have returned to 2019 levels, before the coronavirus pandemic. After an increase in the annoyance and sleep disturbance levels caused by some sources in 2020, there was a slight decrease in 2021. In 2021, people remained particularly affected by sources close to their home, such as road traffic, neighbours and construction and demolition activities. Other sources of serious annoyance, such as air traffic, caused them more trouble in 2021 than in 2020. The main sources of noise that caused annoyance and sleep disturbance remained road traffic and neighbours. In 2021, road traffic (on roads with speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour) was the main source of annoyance. In 2019, it was neighbours. Road traffic and neighbours also remained the main sources of annoyance and sleep disturbance caused by vibrations. As far as odour annoyance is concerned, neighbours were the main source in 2021, just like they were in 2020. The main sources of odour annoyance in 2019 were fireplaces and multifuel stoves. The main cause of concern was ‘living in the vicinity of a high-risk enterprise or industry’. However, the level of concern was below that caused by ‘living in a busy street’ in 2020, which was the main cause of concern in that year. As for the effects of environmental factors, people were most concerned about the health effects of the air quality in residential areas. This was the same in 2020. In 2021, people had roughly the same expectations (more, less, the same) about the development of their neighbourhood or noise in their environment as in previous years. In 2021, almost 1,990 residents of the Netherlands aged 16 and over took part in this study. While this was a lower number than in previous years, it was still sufficient to be representative. The study was carried out by RIVM and Statistics Netherlands (CBS). RIVM bases its results on the outcomes of a questionnaire (Study of Perception of the Home Environment, or OBW).
