    Translated Title
Experiences and needs of seniors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Looking beyond virus control
    Publiekssamenvatting
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Dutch government implemented measures to protect vulnerable groups, such as older people. These measures had a significant impact on their daily lives. RIVM has conducted a study on this group’s experience of the COVID-19 epidemic and their specific needs. National government, municipal authorities and organisations for seniors will be able to use this information in the event of a next wave or new epidemic. RIVM interviewed 26 seniors as well as professionals who frequently work with them. According to the seniors interviewed, during the coronavirus period too much emphasis was placed on physical health, at the expense of the human factor. For example, there was insufficient consideration of social interaction, participation in activities and individual autonomy regarding health choices. The study found several issues of note. Seniors said that some communication about the virus and measures was unclear. For example, they did not understand why particular measures were taken. Seniors further mentioned the loss of social interaction. They also felt that measures ignored the human factor. However, they also described feeling a sense of resignation and said they were able to accept the situation as it was.
