In the Netherlands, there are multiple organisations that are interested in how many people are involved in sport and physical activity and how this number can be improved. There is already a great deal of information available in terms of figures, but these are not always easily comparable. Additionally, information sources on some topics of interest may not be available or may be difficult to find. In response, RIVM has joined forces with the Network of Key Indicators for Sport and Physical Activity on a project to bring together existing data on sport and physical activity in a structured infrastructure. This way, the data can be used both now and in the future. The focus of the present study was on the first of three project phases. In this first phase, topics were classified into themes with the help of research, practice and policy experts. This resulted in 12 themes. Examples are what sports and physical activities people engage in and how often, what skills are needed to learn how to move, what the living environment looks like, who works in the world of sport, and integrity. To put the 12 themes into context, nearly 400 indicators were placed within the theme structure. Examples of indicators include the percentage of people who engage in sport, the number of hours of physical education in school, and the score assigned to a living environment for the degree to which it facilitates physical activity. Some indicators were already known, while others are new. For the new indicators, it is not yet certain whether the necessary information to determine a reliable figure is available. For each theme, the experts indicated which indicators they considered to be the most important. Developing the thematic classification involved a total of 99 experts from 27 organisations. The objective was to ensure that the entire field of sport and physical activity could relate to the result. The Network of Key Indicators for Sport and Physical Activity comprises several organisations that contribute to knowledge about sport and physical activity: the Knowledge Centre for Sport and Physical Activity, NOC*NSF, RIVM, the Mulier Institute, the Knowledge Centre for Injury Prevention (VeiligheidNL), and Statistics Netherlands. The next phase will consist of listing definitions and selecting appropriate methods to compile figures for the different indicators. It will also become clear which existing and potential data collections can be used as sources for these figures and which organisations manage those sources.
