In the Netherlands two models are in use to evaluate the effects of changes in environmental factors on the vegetation: DEMNAT and SMART-MOVE. This report focuses on the consistency between the vegetation response modules in DEMNAT and SMART-MOVE. These modules describe the response of vegetation to changing site conditions. Using multiple logistic regression analysis, in SMART-MOVE a relation is described between the probability of occurrence of each plant species and acidity, nutrient availability, moisture and chlorinity of the sampled sites. In DEMNAT the so-called ecotope system is in use. An ecotope is a ecologically homogeneous species group, sharing similar combination of environmental conditions. The response modules are based on the same data. Firstly the data are analyzed than the response modules were compared. Although the way of modeling differ considerably it is shown that the outcomes were reasonably consistent. A change of the environmental factors leads to similar responses in both models. Since both models uses a different approach and have an emphasis on different environmental issues they complement each other. It is therefore recommended to bring together both models in one system.
