    Title
Natuurontwikkeling in Nederland in kaart gebracht
    Translated Title
    Nature development in the Netherlands
    Publiekssamenvatting
The National Ecological Network (EHS), a network of connected nature reserves with a total area of 695.00 ha is an important part of modern Dutch environmental policies. Through nature development corridors and enclaves of agricultural activity can be transformed into nature reserves. The aim of this study was to find out: Where are nature development projects located in The Netherlands, now and in the future, and what is their potential considering their current state? During this study nature development in the Netherlands has been mapped, creating a so called 'Map of Hope'. Despite the degrading quality of Dutch nature reserves, nature development creates new hope for the environment in the Netherlands. The map gives an overview of nature developmental projects from the past and sites where nature development is planned for the future. The process of limitation, acquisition, restoration and devolution of the EHS and the nature developmental projects are behind schedule. Despite the expected increase in speed, it remains unclear whether all the goals will be achieved in 2018. Only an increase in area will not achieve the desired effect, without matching environmental improvements. Although the environmental quality has improved since the 1980's, there are still many problems to be solved. Groundwater depletion is a serious issue all over the Netherlands. Acidification and eutrofication levels are still too high in areas of intensive cattle-breeding. Nature developmental projects in these areas will not reach their full potential due to these limiting factors. The best environmental circumstances are found in the north of the country.
