This report outlines the starting points and the overall set-up for an information system on medical radiation. Information on the diagnostic and therapeutic use of ionising radiation needs to be collected for this system. The system must also facilitate a simple trend analysis in the number of examinations, the average dose to the patient, the dose distribution (diagnostics) among patients and the volume of the practice (therapy). Existing data sources on the medical use of radiation has been inventoried and an assessment of the information system carried out. Important gaps were identified, followed by proposals to cover them. Particularly insight into the dose (distribution) per examination is lacking and the current reports on intramural examinations are too superficial. Improving the insight into doses will require hospitals to put an effort into monitoring. A more detailed breakdown of the examinations can, in principle, be embedded in the existing enquiries. Proposals for a follow-up trajectory are outlined in general terms.
