The main purpose of this technical documentation is to clearly establish the key ideas and methods used during development of the MEI-model. This document introduces in this way the technical set-up of the model for application developers and administrators. In describing how MEI (version 2) works from a technical point of view, a set of general principles and starting-points influencing the choice of software and the application set-up are first given. The main technical improvement is found in the use of a database instead of spreadsheets to store model calculations. The MEI model is built as a 3-tier application, separating the user services from the business logic and the data services. Several main functions of the application are described by using UML (Unified Modelling Language). Diagrams arising from this language that were put to use are: use-cases, to describe the system from the user's point of view; class-diagrams for functional units and their relationships; and sequence diagrams, to describe the interaction between classes on a time scale.
