Abstract
Monitoring of the microbiological quality of water is done to verify whether a specific water body or water source is suitable for its intended use. The public health impact of microbial contaminants in water is high. Targets of the microbiological analysis of water may be bacteria, viruses or protozoa, that may either be pathogenic to man or harmless indicator organisms. Microbiological analysis of water requires target specific sampling techniques, sample treatment and processing, and detection methods. Detection methods include culture on selective growth mediums, cell culture, microscopy, and molecular methods, or a combination of these methods.
