Actualisatie AERIUS Calculator en Monitor 2023

Update to AERIUS Calculator and Monitor 2023

Abstract
New data on the emission and distribution of nitrogen is made available regularly. RIVM processes the latest data and insights in the calculation tool AERIUS every year and makes this information accessible. In a report, RIVM describes the updates it has made to AERIUS and what this means for the results in Calculator and Monitor. AERIUS Calculator allows authorities and project organisers to calculate how much nitrogen is emitted by new economic activities and how much of this is deposited in Dutch Natura 2000 sites. AERIUS Monitor gives authorities insight into current and expected nitrogen depositions in these areas. It also indicates the extent to which nature is affected by these depositions. AERIUS Calculator and Monitor both support permit licensing and the development of nitrogen policy. The calculations and insights must be as precise and up to date as possible, so that policymakers and authorities can use this information to make the right decisions. Changes To determine the emission and deposition of nitrogen, AERIUS Calculator makes use of nitrogen emission indicators, such as emission factors. This data is updated annually. In addition, the data on nitrogensensitive nature in Natura 2000 sites (habitat map) is also updated. The revised critical loads for nitrogen deposition are processed in AERIUS as well. If the nitrogen deposition is higher than the critical loads, nature can deteriorate. In most cases, the critical loads have become stricter because of new international insights. Deposition maps AERIUS Monitor shows the nitrogen deposition maps. RIVM updates these annually based on the latest data on nitrogen emissions and measurements. The maps show the effects of policy at home and abroad, such as changes in the number of livestock animals and developments in traffic. As a result of these updates, the locations where the calculation tool shows that the critical deposition values have been or are about to be exceeded have changed. These are the locations where AERIUS Calculator performs default calculations for permit licensing.
