    Title
    Translated Title
Surveillance 1997 into the occurrence of residues of anabolic steroids, beta-agonists, gestagens and thyreostatics in slaughter animals
    Publiekssamenvatting
During the surveillance conducted in 1997, focusing on special slaughter locations, 61 samples of urine, 16 samples of skin, 16 samples of meat and 13 samples of faeces were analysed for the presence of residues of anabolic steroids. A set of 16 samples of fat was analysed for the presence of residues of gestagens. A set of 61 samples of urine and 83 samples of bovine/pig eye was analysed for the presence of beta-agonist residues. Finally, 20 samples of thyroid gland were analysed for the residues of thyreostatics. The samples were taken from 119 different animals; more than one tissue was sampled for some of the animals. One animal was found positive for the beta-agonists clenbuterol and bromobuterol. Two animals were found positive for clenbuterol only. One animal was found positive for the thyreostatic, tapazole and one animal was for the anabolic steroid ethynylestradiol. From the 119 animals checked during this surveillance programme, 5 animals (4%) were found positive for one or more of the illegal growth-promoting agents
