A quantitative description is presented on the emissions and distribution of the pathogens mentioned through domestic waste water. The emissions were modelled with PROMISE based on average concentrations in untreated wastewater and the average removal by sewage treatment. Emission of Cryptosporidium originated largely from discharges of treated wastewater (84%), whilst emission of Giardia and enteroviruses came for the larger part from discharges of untreated wastewater (respectively 82% and 69%). Distribution in surface waters was calculated with WATNAT assuming a constant inactivation rate of Cryptosporidium and a temperature dependent inactivation rate for Giardia and enteroviruses. At several locations in the large rivers actual measured and calculated concentrations of the protozoa were similar. For enteroviruses this was the case at almost all locations. It was, however, estimated that discharges from abroad were the major source for the occurrence of these pathogens in the large rivers. The concentrations of protozoa coming from Germany were of similar level as those coming from Belgium, which indicate at the existence of other sources of emission than domestic wastewater, such as run-off of animal manure from land. The required treatment of Cryptosporidium, Giardia and enteroviruses for the production of drinking water were estimated to be 5 to 8 log units. Concentrations of pathogens in surface waters on a national scale could be estimated with models, which form the basis for calculation of exposure to these micro-organisms due to water recreation and drinking water consumption. Combined with dose-response relations health risks can be estimated. These models can also be applied to quantify the effects of measures and to make prognoses on the quality of surface waters and the related health risks according to certain scenario's.
